In Art 20 class, I decided to mix up a tried and true fiber art project and add in cyanotypes as the base this semester. I’ve never made a cyanotype before and cheated a little by buying pretreated fabric squares. I told students that I honestly have no idea how this is going to turn out - the unknown is exciting. AND, after listening to a podcast for art teachers, I decided to do the project with them. Hello everyone! The countdown to my trip to Italy has begun…I don’t want to bore everyone with all the details and at the same time, if you’re interested, you can follow my new account over at @artfulchangemakers my friend/ colleague and I will be documenting our trip and our classes throughout this next school year as a part of our grant. I leave for Italy in 2 weeks to research, learn and fulfill the requirements of the teacher grant that my co-worker/friend and I were awarded this past spring. She left yesterday and dropped off this water color set to me. I finally look respectable enough to snap a selfie wearing my new triple birdie earrings this afternoon - but I’m not coordinated enough to smile and look at the camera at the same time. 😅 Notice the metal bird art in the background! If I remember correctly, we rescued this from our alley in Denver several years ago and it’s been hanging outside on our patio in various homes ever since. Or maybe we found it in a thrift store. I can’t quite remember.

My point is I love birds. They’ve been a motif in my work for several years now. I remember visiting the Rachel Carson Nature Refuge which serves as protected space for migrating birds in Maine in the early 2000s when I took a plein air painting class and was mesmerized by all the wild life. I don’t see nearly the range of wildlife where I live now, but it is here if I pay attention.

This afternoon, I created a layered wood cut artwork based off of some ceramic work I’ve previously done.
