custom ceramic decals for potters and ceramic artists

Iron Oxide Custom Ceramic Decals
Iron Oxide Custom Ceramic Decals

Ceramicscapes has been on the hunt for an affordable, environmentally friendly and expeditious method of making custom ceramic decals in color or black and white for potters the past 6 years. In 2014, I decided to bite the bullet and purchased  a brand new 8 1/2″ x 11″ full color ceramic decal printer from a local Colorado company that has changed my direction in ceramics. I’d like to share that technology with my fellow clay artists and have decided to sell decals by the sheet for anyone interested in adding another dimension to your art work.

Why decals?

Water slide ceramic decals are a great way to add visual interest to functional and decorative ceramic work. Ceramic decals can be applied to commercial or handmade glazed pottery and are fired in a kiln to approximately ^012 or 1580° F (860° C).

The best results are achieved by firing decals onto white or lighter color ceramic glaze surfaces.

Sourcing images

The best artwork is your own and can include drawings, photographs, paintings, vector art and more. Otherwise, plenty of graphic sources are available for free or a small fee. Please make sure that images are free to use commercially (if you sell your work) by looking for the Creative Commons License or that imagery is in the public domain.

Formatting imagery

Format as many images on a single sheet of  8.5″ x 11″ (approximately A4) page allowing for a 1/4″ margin on all sides.

Click here to download a pdf of a sheet with margin guides.

Set the resolution to 300 dpi. I accept .psd, jpeg, .tiff, .pdf files. If you do not have Photoshop, GIMP is a great free alternative, or use an online editor like Pixlr or similar.

If you need advanced graphic assistance to lay out your ceramic decal sheet, I charge $20.00 per unique sheet in addition to the cost of the decal sheet.

Check out this quick blog post I wrote on how to format a ceramic decal sheet using Photoshop. More tutorials will be added in the future.

Name your sheets

Please name each sheet you send to me with your last name underscore first name underscore number of sheet to help me keep track of your order.

Color disclaimer

I purchased the food safe ceramic toners which have limitations in regards to achieving certain colors. The color red, for example, results in more of a brick red color rather than a true cherry or fire engine red. Color decals look best on a white or light glaze background. See the color swatches above.
